Local
History
You could
be forgiven for thinking the name ' Rosecraddoc' was inspired by the
late Spring display of vibrantly coloured Rhododendron that predominate
through the village - but the explanation is much more ancient. The
first recorded mention of Rosecraddoc as a settlement is in the Domesday
book where it is referred to as 'Recharedoc'. 'Re' could be corrupted
to the later common Cornish prefix of 'Tre' meaning dwelling and 'Charedoc'
was early Celtic word now replaced by 'Caradon' The name means 'dwelling
on the Caradon Moor or Heath'. The rhododendrons are probably escapees
from the nearby manor house and gardens, reputed to have been designed
by Capability Brown, and paid with the profits generated by the rich
tin and copper finds of the Caradon area in mid 1800s.
